Quilter, problem solver!

Remember the donated coins quilt I finished recently? I washed it the day before yesterday to get it ready for donating and several fabrics ran. (I don't prewash my fabrics either so it could have easily been one of my quilts) I washed in cold water, with a dye catcher - twice, ran out to the quilt store and bought Synthropol which still didn't help although there was no more running. I spent yesterday wondering what I was going to do - I couldn't donate the quilt with these big splotches but today the answer came to me....I fused circles across the quilt to cover the larger obvious spots.

Keith came in when I was taking the photo and said it looked whimsical! Now I just have to finish stitching the circles down - I'm appliqueing them by hand with perle cotton.

On being productive

I loaded and quilted a donated top from Barbara today - this one will also go to Project Linus along with the other ones I've been working on for HeartStrings.

I frequently get comments on how productive I am. When trying to finish as many donated tops as I can, I find that if I set up a pantograph or template and thread color on the longarm that I save time if I quilt more than one top before changing them. I just knew that of all the tops I have here waiting I could find another one that I could use the Double Rose pantograph and cream thread with and look what I found in the box of 7 tops sent by Nancy in CT!

The quilt on the left is Barbara's top, finished and ready for binding and the one on the right is Nancy's ready to load. Both of these tops came with backings ready to load on the longarm.

Don't you love the change in the lighting from the first picture? I love the afternoon sun that we get in our apartment. I know we won't find the same light when we get ready to move.

Now it's time to work on bindings.

I'm so excited!

My Kindle is supposed to come tomorrow. Last night I shopped for a couple books so I'll be ready to read when it arrives. One of the coolest features is that I can download the first chapter of a book and before I decide if I want to buy it....if I do, it's there in seconds with the touch of a button!

On my trip home from Deb's I had a book with me that I realized I'd finish reading before getting home so I bought another one in the airport....unfortunately I finished that one too and ran out of reading material before getting home. The Kindle will solve that problem for me - I'll never run out of read material.

On today's list:
Load and quilt a donated HeartStrings top
Get a binding on the Coins quilt and start to stitch it down.

UFO # 10

Not much going on today. I bound and labeled the strippie quilt which will be donated to Project Linus as part of HeartString's January project. That makes 10 UFO's completed so far. I don't know how I can get so much done and yet feel so far behind already. (I did take time to play with postcards tonight.) The close up shows just how cute this simple quilt is.

HeartStrings Anniversary Quilt

I'm celebrating the first year anniversary of the HeartStrings Quilt Project by making myself an anniversary quilt and quilters from the HeartStrings Yahoo group have been sending me blocks to be a part of it. I think it's so neat how these string blocks from different quilters all work together. These 4 blocks came from Texas, Australia, Massachusetts, and Colorado.

I did it

The body of this stuffed dragonfly was too thick for the longarm so I stitched the wings down on the longarm - close to the body - I went back and forth several times.

Then, after taking it off the longarm I decided that I wanted the legs stitched down so I appliqued them by hand. The wings, head, and tail are left free.

And because Dawn cautions about not leaving anything unstitched that little fingers might get caught under - I stitched the body at the head and tail where the wings ended by hand, from the back of the quilt with a strong, waxed hand quilting thread. This dragonfly is going NO WHERE! Isn't it cute? You can click any of the photos to see a larger view - the photo below shows the back after I'm done.

For those of you with Dawn's Pajama Quilter DVD, she demonstrates this in the Bonus Extras section and it's lots of fun!

I'm so easily distracted

I went searching for a panel quilt to try a cute thing from the Pajama Quilter DVD, Dawn attaches small beanie babies or stuffed animals onto the quilt top with the longarm (she even sent me some to try).

Instead of a panel I found this old UFO, a strippie top that Mom had pieced but didn't really like so she gave it to me to finish - a long time ago. I decided it would be perfect for this dragonfly. So I loaded the top and quilted it and after watching the section on the DVD on attaching them, I'm going to give it a shot.

And isn't this little lizard just perfect for the fabric I already had pulled for another one of my quick donation quilts.

I love this quilt!

I had an email from Susie in MD that she'd pieced the Spiderweb quilt from my MaryQuilts.com site. When it's finished she is going to donate it to Quilts of Valor. I love this quilt in RWB maybe even more than that one I made!

What happened to the warmer weather?

It was really cold the day I left to visit Deb (-12 that morning) and it's cold today (-1) but yesterday it was 42, here in Minneapolis!! Luckily I like the cold, now if it will just snow today like they're calling for, I'll be completely happy.

Having been gone for days I should jump right back in and start quilting and assemble my heart quilt but I'm going to take it easy today.

I've got some packages to go through - stuffed animals from Dawn and a box with more donated quilts from Barbara along with lots of mail.

I think I'll set simple goals for today - load a quilt on the longarm for tomorrow, unpacking the embellishment goodies I bought at Deb's, and play with postcards.

Since I missed my Sunday stashbusting report for last week, I'll add it here:
  • I finished the blocks for the Heart quilt - all the fabric is from stash
  • I finished the Dragonfly quilt (UFO #9) - only the binding was from my stash (the top was pieced with Mom from her fabric and VickiW made me the hand dyed backing)
  • I finished the Coins (UFO #8) quilt donated by Barbara - only the binding from that one was from my stash.
  • I did purchase a backing for my HeartStrings Anniversary quilt from Pam at Real Women Quilt which arrived while I was gone.
  • Technically, this goes against me this week not last, but I did purchase a backing yesterday at one of Deb's quilt shops that will be used for my Irish Chain quilt.
  • I bought LOTS and LOTS of embellishment *stuff* while I was at Deb's....perle cotton, beads, fibers, etc along with books.

I can safely say that I can embellish postcards and start my blue/white crazy quilt and count on having all the supplies I might want on-hand. Now I just have to find a way to store them in a way that I can easily find what I'm looking for.

Thank you all who commented or emailed and introduced yourself - it was great getting to know my readers a little better.

A new postcard, heading home

Deb has a couple of beaded purses and I decided I wanted to try a postcard that is completely beaded. I looked through a motif book she has and I found a butterfly and started beading it. It's not going all that well but I'm learning as I go along. She's been a really bad influence on me - I've ordered 9 books from Amazon.com since I've been here(I'm a sucker for books anyway). I can't wait to get home and absorb all the content!

I'll head home tomorrow around noon - I have a long travel day ahead but hopefully my flights will go as well as the ones coming down.

Thanks for all the emails and comments - it's been fun reading them and getting to know those of you who stop by my blog.

Blog stats

OK, I admit it - I watch my blog stats to see how many visitors I'm getting. Most people don't comment although I get random emails from people who say they read my blog all the time. I really like to hear from you - so if you read my blog please introduce yourself either by commenting or emailing me directly.

Postcard fun!

Deb and I made this postcard tonight - isn't it cute? We used her wool and then used heart brads we bought at Joann's this afternoon. Isn't this cute?

While I was attaching all the brads, Deb was filling up a big box that she's going to ship to me with hand dyed fabric, wool, trims, yarns - TONS of stuff for me to use when I get home.

I took close-ups too

I had a comment that I should have taken photos of Deb's quilting....you know I did. I should have known you'd want to see the quilting detail. Here is a closeup of each of the quilts - again, Deb did the quilting not piecing on all of these. Click the photos to enlarge. (For those of you who don't know, Deb is my sister)

Quilt Show

Deb and I went to Port Charlotte to one of the local guild shows and although she didn't enter any of her quilts - there were 3 she had quilted for customers and all 3 had ribbons. I made her stand by all the quilts so I could take her photo. Again, she didn't piece any of these but this first one won Best Machine Quilting.

This one won first place.

This one won 2nd place. This guild doesn't give out double ribbons so she won't get two of these but she will get the machine quilting ribbon to add to her collection. I bought some beads, ribbons, perle cotton and a book for inspiration at the show.

Quilt Show

Deb and I are heading for a local quilt show and then going bead shopping today. Here's her wall of ribbons - pretty impressive considering she's also had customer quilts win in shows that don't give ribbons to the quilter. Wonder if she'll add more today?

Last night I *consulted* with her on her next show quilt....I wonder how much of my advice she'll take? You know I'll take credit if she listens to me and the quilt does well. I don't enter quilts into shows but I'm good at telling other people what to do!

See the photo on the far left? That's the last portrait we have of Mom and Dad together - I should find mine and hang it up but I think I might have left it in Marietta. We tried to talk Mom into coming with me on this visit but she didn't feel up to making the trip.

Folk Art Quilts

I mentioned it in an earlier post but just to give credit where due, my heart quilt is a variation of Sandy Bonsib's cover quilt on her book Folk Art Quilts.

My travel day was long considering I never went to bed last night! I left for the airport at 5:30Am and can anyone tell me why I'm still awake? I told Deb to come knocking on the door by 8:30AM (she's an early riser).

We should have some photos to share tomorrow - we're going to a local quilt show and Deb heard that at least a couple quilts she quilted got ribbons in the show. We'll also stop by a bead shop - I think I need more since I'm just starting to establish my embellishment stash.

Blocks done

Not the best photo since the quilt is too big for the design wall and the lighting in my studio is not very good at 3AM but I finished all the blocks for this quilt and it's ready to be assembled when I get back from Florida!

Heading to Florida!

With an anticipated low of MINUS 19 tonight, I'm pretty pleased to be jumping on a plane tomorrow morning to visit Deb in Florida. I do enjoy the winter weather but a long weekend in the FL sunshine will be nice.

My goal was to finish all the blocks for my heart quilt before leaving so I'm going to head to the sewing room now - I just have one more row of blocks to do so I should easily be able to finish them tonight.

I'm taking my laptop and camera so I plan to continue to post while I'm gone - I just won't be checking email as frequently.

I posted several times last night testing the signature and link so you might have gotten some that worked or didn't work. I added my name but then decided only to put the email link...then decided again to put my name. This is the final version (for now). Hopefully the signature shows up AND the email link should work!

Email link

Judy added a signature and email link to each of her blog posts a little while back and since I thought it was a good idea, I went looking for the *spot* in blogger to add the link to each of my posts without having to type it in each time.

So, now you can either comment or email me directly.

UFO # 9

I know, they just keep coming don't they. I finished the binding and labeled the Dragonfly quilt tonight. You can't see the quilting in this photo but I posted a photo of the back the other day - my Wonky Feathers show up really well.

This was a top I designed in EQ for Mom to use fabric given to her by Deb. Since I'm such a good daughter, I also cut it out, and then helped with the piecing when the sashing was not lining up for her. It will be donated as part of the HeartStrings Quilt Project.

Amazon's Kindle Reader

I don't know if you all realize that I love gadgets and electronics (computers, digital cameras, sewing machines, longarms, etc) but one thing I had doubts I'd ever purchase was an electronic book reader. I LOVE books and I couldn't picture myself reading them on a computer type screen.

Well I changed my mind - after weighing the pros and cons I'm going to give the new Amazon Kindle Reader a try. I love the idea of carrying my library around with me in the space of a paperback book, downloading a new book instantly, and paying less per book = more books.

I made the decision to buy a few days after Christmas but they've been back ordered. I got an email last night saying it should arrive the week of February 8th - I can't wait!

It certainly won't replace all books for me but it will definitely be my "carry around" book. I'll just warn you - they aren't cheap but I figure for me the savings in purchasing the books will help offset the cost.

UFO #8

I finished up the binding on another UFO tonight. This was also a donated HeartStrings top sent to me from Barbara.

I made some new HeartStrings labels for 2008 and I'd printed a page yesterday to put on Deb's strippie top that I finished last night - thought it was too big so I printed another page tonight using a smaller label for Barbara's coins. Funny but seeing them side by side the larger one doesn't seem as HUGE as it did last night so I'll go ahead and use the other labels from that sheet rather than waste them. You know, those Printed Treasures sheets aren't cheap!

The good thing is I've finished two more HeartStrings donation quilts and now I'm going to work some on the blocks for the Pieces of my Heart quilt (see, it has a name now).

Am I crazy?

I want to start another crazy quilt but I'm debating the color scheme. I only have cotton fabric so it won't be a *true* crazy quilt with it's mix of fabrics but I'm really tempted to make it in only blue and white. I've never seen a two color crazy quilt but I liked the look of my postcard and love blue and white quilts so I'm thinking why not. It's not going to be huge - look how long the doll quilt took me and that's without any beading which I definitely want to do on this one. Any thoughts?

I bought this book after seeing it on VickiW's blog and I love it - it has lots of motifs for me to use for embroidery. I decided I'd start embroidering some on fabric patches while I decide my color scheme. On Allie's blog I learned I could use paper to trace the design and stitch through - how cool is that?
I've finished the binding on this donation quilt tonight. It reinforced my belief that having a large stash isn't necessarily a bad thing. I love that I can pull backings and bindings for a variety of donated tops and finish up these quilts with the fabric I have on hand. I love how this stripe looks.

I had several great suggestions about a name for my current piecing project, my favorite was from GypsyQuilter "Pieces of my Heart". Of course, I'll probably shorten it to "the heart quilt" and 6 months from now I won't remember what I actually called it but for now it pleases me.

The week in review

Stashbusting
  • More progress made on my current project which is completely from stash and officially needs a name now - I started out calling them crumb blocks but they're really more like log cabin blocks pieced with crumbs and strings....add some scattered hearts and what do you get? I don't know - any suggestions for naming this quilt?
  • The backing and binding on this donated top quilted this week were from stash.
  • The backing and binding on this donated top finished this week were from stash.
  • The binding for this donated top was pulled from stash and has been stitched on - now it just needs to be hand-stitched down.
  • No fabric purchases either.

I got through my to do list this week - 3 tops quilted (4 if you count the dwirling panel quilt on Sunday) and 3 quilts bound.

Finally, two UFO's were finished #6 my doll sized Crazy Quilt and #7 a donated HeartStrings top pieced by Annie.

I got lucky

I realized after starting to quilt this afternoon that this beautiful backing was going to SHOW every flaw and that maybe I should have saved it for something safe like a pantograph. I decided I wasn't going to post photos of the back if it looked bad.

Not only does it look halfway decent but the tension was excellent and even though I used a variegated thread...no top thread dots on the back. You can enlarge both photos to see the quilting up close. Vicki, maybe I should quilt more often without any sleep!

Still awake

To keep myself awake, I started quilting the dragonfly quilt. I debated for 1/2 a second not doing an overall design and quilting each block separately but since I needed to practice my Wonky Feathers again, that's what I went with.

Believe it or not, this is the first time I've used one of my variegated threads on this machine. The thread broke on me a couple times but once I turned the needle a little more to the right it's been running fine.

I have a plan

I have to get back to a somewhat regular sleep schedule before leaving on Thursday to visit Deb so I decided I'd stay up all night and then NOT go to bed until tomorrow evening. Keith's been told he has to keep me entertained today so I don't sleep. Unfortunately, it's MINUS 16 degrees right now so the idea of curling up in bed under a pile of quilts is really appealing.

I've had a wonderfully productive night.

  • I finished my applique hearts and sewed the skinny red strips on them
  • I made and then machine stitched 2 bindings (I still have to turn and hand stitch them to the backing)
  • I made another row of blocks
  • I squared up a backing and loaded a top to quilt later today.
I was having trouble finding a binding for this donated top I quilted the other day but then I found this stripe buried in the stash.

This is a terrible photo because the light is NOT good in my quilting room at 4AM. My design wall isn't big enough for this quilt so the blocks are just pinned up to give me an idea of how it will look. I still have two rows of blocks to piece but this coming along nicely.

This is the top I loaded on the longarm. I *designed* this in EQ for Mom and then helped her get it pieced. The instruction sheet is posted on MaryQuilts.com

And finally, I wish I could get a better photo of this backing made for me by VickiW. I won a prize at her blog and she dyed this backing for me to go with the Dragonfly quilt. It's just perfect for this quilt and she made a huge piece. I have enough leftover to use with a second fabric and make one of my Off Center 4 Patch backings for another quilt.

And before I forget to mention it, I was busy the night before redoing the HeartStrings website if you want to take a look.

If I was the jealous type

It would bother me that Deb is a lot better quilter than I am....but since it's an area I can't possibly complete - I'll just be the proud sister. Deb didn't piece this top but she did a wonderful job of quilting it.

She posted photos on her blog and I think even commented when this quilt won in Vermont but imagine my surprise when I was flipping through my Quilter's Newsletter tonight and came upon this. Too bad she's not a night owl like me or I would have called her!
By the way, JudyL's book got a mention in this month's issue too.

A bit of this....a little of that

I know you have heard it before but my sleep schedule is completely out of control again. I was up all last night and most of today but crashed this afternoon and had to have a nap before cooking dinner.

I did make good use of my time and fused my hearts and started to stitch them down (by hand)for my current quilt. There are only 9 of them and I've just got 3 left to blanket stitch. Here's a photo of the blocks on the design wall....I need more red and then a purple and tan or goldish column.

I finished the Dwirling on this top sent by Deb in AZ too and I'm pretty happy with the results - it's a fun pattern to stitch.

Most of the night was spent on categorizing my expenses in preparation for sending off my tax stuff. I use online banking and download statements into Microsoft Money but this year I've been REALLY bad about assigning categories so I spent HOURS last night and got through 3/4 of it although I still have to finish up categorizing on the credit card expenses. Then I'll be able to print my summaries up and the hard part will be done.

Quilting and book expenses aren't looking as bad as I expected BUT dining out - OMG, I'm surprised we're not broke! I've actually been really good this week and have cooked every night but one and that night Keith just stopped by Panera for sandwiches and soup so it wasn't too bad. That darn Condo in GA that we haven't been able to sell has been a drain as well as the Marietta house BUT I also started the process to sell the house to Chris and Becky. They've been pre-approved for a mortgage and I'm working with an attorney to write up a contract.

Don't you HATE this time of year? I'm always stressed until I see what we owe or will get back. Usually it's just a little over or under but I still worry about unpleasant surprises!

In case I haven't bored you completely...I've been cooped up in the house for two weeks because I'm still feeling the effects of this cold so now that I'm ready to get out some tomorrow and this weekend, they're calling for low Temps of -13 to -15 with wind chills of 25 to 45 below zero. Luckily, I leave for Florida to visit Deb a week from today.

Oops, one more thing! Thanks to Deb and Ruthie for mentioning me on their blogs for the You Make My Day award. I already said I wasn't going to list 10 blogs but again, I thank the entire community of bloggers that we belong to for continuing to inspire my quilting and being my virtual friends.

Choosing thread and more dwirling

Sometimes when I want to do an overall design and I'm worried how my thread is going to look, I'll set it on the top and unwind a bit and see if it's too distracting. This wasn't the first thread I tried but it turned out to be my best choice for dwirling on this HeartStrings top pieced by Deb in AZ. This is another quilt for our January *project* for HeartStrings.

I'm trying to space this further apart than my panel quilt to keep it cuddly but I think on the next one I can leave even more space - what do you think?

Thanks for all the comments and emails - I worked off my irritation last night by making some red blocks for my current quilt in progress.

UFO # 7

You guys do realize that this time of year, pretty much everything I complete counts as a UFO finish right? According to the Stashbuster *rules*, any quilt in progress at the end of 2007 that at least needs a binding and label counts as a UFO.

There was a comment on Stashbuster that hit me wrong - I don't judge anyone's productivity (except mine). I'm not in a competition with anyone (but myself). I don't work, my kids are grown and making and donating quilts is what I do and yes, I'm productive - I can't imagine why that would be an issue for someone.

This was a donated top (yes they count since I'm quilting, binding, and labeling them) pieced by Annie and sent to me to finish and donate for HeartStrings. And since I'm so proud of myself, there's another close-up of the Wonky Feather Quilting. To get a good view - click to enlarge the photo of the quilting close-up.

An early start

I hope you all aren't tired of seeing Swirls!

I got a fairly early start this morning in spite of staying up until 4AM and quilted this top sent to me by Barbara. It will be donated as part of the HeartStrings Quilt Project.

Progress and UFO #6

This week's list is simple I want to get 3 quilts bound and 3 tops quilted. If time allows, I'd also like to at least get one row of blocks for my crumb quilt pieced too.

Tonight I put my nose to the grindstone and made and machine stitched 2 of the 3 bindings on-they still need to be finished by hand, pieced a back, and loaded the next top on the longarm.

Instead of playing with postcards, I decided I'd work on my doll quilt and actually finished it up tonight. This makes my 6th UFO finish for 2008. I took these blocks made 4-5 years ago, pieced them into a doll quilt in September and have been working on the embroidery on and off since then- it feels good to check it off the list. I won't bother to post a photo tonight since I just recently posted photos of it.

More grunt work!

With all this sitting out on my sewing table I bet you can guess what I WANT to work on today but there's grunt work to be done first.
  • I have bindings to make and machine stitch on the quilts so I can stitch them down by hand in the evenings.
  • I need to make 2 backings
  • I need to load the next quilt on the longarm

I also have some personal, non quilt related things that need attention today including fixing something for dinner so I'll have to resist the urge for now. Maybe if I hurry and get everything done, I'll play some tonight after Keith goes to bed.

I also wanted to thank Mel and Solvi for choosing my blog for the You Make My Day Award. It's wonderful knowing that the things I share here are inspiring to other bloggers and quilters.
My blog is the journal I always wanted to keep but couldn't seem to stay with it and on a personal level, I love having a record that I can go back and look through but you guys make it FUN!

I don't practice on muslin

Not that I think there's anything wrong with practicing machine quilting on muslin but I just feel its wasteful of MY time. Sometimes I'll practice on paper, then on a strip of leftover backing at the bottom of a quilt, and then jump right in on a *real* quilt. Other times I'll pull out one of the panel quilts I keep on hand for this purpose. (When I first got my longarm I practiced a lot on panels.)

Haven't those of you with the Pajama Quilter DVD been itching to give Dwirling a try? I have - so I pulled out a panel and had some fun this afternoon. Now all I have to do is bind it and it will make a nice little donation quilt.

UFO #5

Another one finished today. I just took the last stitch on the binding and label. This top was one of two from blocks donated by Stashbuster and pieced by Sandra. She also used some extra blocks on the back.

I can't stop!

In case you didn't know it, I have somewhat of an obsessive personality. I tend to immerse myself in things that catch my interest. This postcard obsession I'll blame on VickiW and Deb.

Who needs to buy fabric anyway

Especially when I'm trying to build up my embellishment stash! I couldn't resist these tropical fish buttons when I was in Joann's today. My journal postcard is in anticipation of my upcoming visit to Deb in Florida.

The reason I was in Joann's was to look for some embellishments I could use in some Valentine's postcards. I saw this paper-punch on sale and wondered if it would cut through fabric. It does NOT! But...
I figured out at the store that even if it didn't cut through fabric I could quickly cut out hearts from fusible web....
and these only took a few minutes to cut out.

So I'm not sure I'm accomplishing a whole lot by not buying fabric since I'm just diverting funds to books and embellishments but I'm having LOTS and LOTS of fun!

By the way, I got through my entire list EXCEPT I had hoped to quilt one more top this week but all in all I'm happy with what I accomplished.

Sunday Stashbusting report:
1. Blue and green crumb blocks from stash

2. Lizard quilt finished this week - a UFO top, finished with backing and binding from stash

3. Backing on the HeartStrings top that I quilted with Wonky Feathers was from stash

4. Chinese Coins UFO that was quilted this week - border, sashing, and binding were stash

5. My Pink HeartStrings - a UFO was finished this week, the blocks and binding were stash

Inspiration

I am overflowing with inspiration these days. I've got a bunch of new books (these are just a few) to inspire my postcards and crazy quilting and the Pajama Quilter DVD. I want to try it all! The Quilt Toppings book has lots of good ideas for embellishments.

Before unloading Annie's pink HeartString top from the longarm, I used the extra backing to try some of Dawn's echoed flowers. Keep in mind that I need to practice these but I watched the segment on the DVD and then stitched them.

Now, are you ready for the UGLY feathers.? The beauty of a busy top is that it hides a lot of flaws but sometimes it makes it difficult to see your previous stitching line. In this photo you can see the one place in this quilt that I sewed over another feather and would you look at that big ugly feather on the bottom of the photo!! And NO, I didn't pick out these and redo them - I kept going.

This next section looks better overall. I wouldn't recommend using a solid backing when you're learning new quilting designs but it was what I had pieced for this quilt so I used it anyway (this was one of my off center 4 patch backings and one fabric was the print above with the echoed flowers and this was the other).
I only have a small whiteboard and I haven't used it much. I'll have to pull it out and do some more practice and maybe look around for a larger one.

Motivation

I've been very productive the last couple weeks and I love how it feeds on itself. The more I finish the harder I work.

This afternoon, I finished the Wonky Feather quilting but it's still on the machine. I have some leftover backing and batting so I'll practice some freehand quilting tomorrow before unloading and trimming the quilt.

Keith's going to be busy and working even longer hours the next couple months so I decided to plan a trip myself. Deb posted some photos on her blog of her quilting area and I decided this would be a good time to visit her. I'll go for a long weekend the end of January. Won't that be fun?

Don't miss the important stuff on the PJ Quilter DVD

Go ahead, click on the larger photos to see the quilting up close. I can handle the critique!

I'm quilting wonky feathers today and while it's not going as well as I'd like it's not too bad either. (As I'm getting in the flow I think I'm doing better.)

LISTEN to Dawn when she says be nice to yourself. It's easy to start focusing on each individual element or wobble, or the spacing that's not just right, or the really bad looking feathers but when I step back and look at the OVERALL quilting, it will do and I will get better.

Funny but the pep talk she gives you on the DVD is just as important as the demonstration of the quilting designs.

Next time, I'll make sure I have chocolate in the house before starting!

Nothing exciting to show today

I worked on grunt work so unless you want to see a photo of a backing or binding I've got nothing to show. I did get some new books so I'll have to update my Shelfari bookshelf later tonight.

Have you seen the "You Make my Day" award going around the web? VickiW mentioned my blog last week and I was thinking about participating and then Annemiek mentioned (nominated?) me too. Rather than listing blogs I'll just say thank you to all of you who inspire my quilting.

Stash quilt - using every last crumb!

Dual inspiration here - my current piecing project based on Sandy Bonsib's quilt and a postcard from the book Postcard Quilts by Caroline Reardon both influenced this latest journal postcard.

UFO #4

I had blue thread on the sewing machine so after finishing up the blue blocks for the crumb/string quilt, I sewed the binding on on this UFO and then sat tonight and stitched it down by hand.

I love these little quilts - this one will be donated through HeartStrings to Project Linus. To see the quilting close-up and some brief instructions on making it, visit my MaryQuilts.com site.

Next up, I'll change to red thread and piece a back for another HeartStrings quilt, sew a binding on this Coins quilt, and then make my red crumb/string blocks....I love having a plan!

UFO #3

I finished the binding and labeled my Pink HeartStrings quilt last night. The Chinese coins quilt is quilted, trimmed, and ready for binding, and I finished all the green crumb/string blocks and am working on the blue blocks for my new quilt.

I know you'll find it hard to believe but I'm so tired and headachy this last week or so after getting over my cold/flu that I'm not doing anything except quilting. I was supposed to fix dinner the last night and tonight but didn't get up early enough to get it in the crock pot; I was supposed to order groceries for the week and missed the deadline yesterday. The apartment needs vacuuming and I haven't been outside for a walk since Saturday. I'm tired of being tired!

A new crumb/string quilt

I've never been a big fan of crumb quilts but I've seen some interesting ones this past year and so I stuck this bin under my sewing machine and have been saving the bits too small to go back in my string bins. Last night I pulled out a pile of greens to start a new quilt.

I used the crumbs for the first 3-4 pieces in the blocks and then when the block grew too large I started using strings.

Although I'm not using her instructions for constructing the blocks, my inspiration is this quilt by Sandy Bonsib. I haven't decided for sure but I may substitute hearts for the star blocks since this will be a donation quilt for HeartStrings.

There's been some discussion on Stashbuster about crumb blocks not coming out the right size and Nancie posted that she makes a template to use to keep her blocks the right size. Since these blocks are going to be 9 inches (9.5 inches with seam allowances) my 9.5 inch ruler was perfect for this. As the blocks get close to the right size I can see at a glance where I need to add the last strip or two and even how wide I need them to be.

Check...check....check

How's that for quick? I've already checked 3 things off this week's list. Here's my journal postcard for New Year's.
I'm having fun playing with beads and embellishments but less is better. I kept adding to the bottom card and wasn't thrilled with the results. It's being sent off and the top one stays!

This week's lists

First more swirls quilting on a UFO, a Chinese Coins quilt pieced for HeartStrings.

Although I don't always write it down, I do keep a weekly to do list.

Finish quilting the Chinese Coins quilt on the machine
Bind 2 quilts
Finish 1 postcard; make 2 new ones
Load and quilt at least 2 tops
Start piecing my next top - a crumb quilt

My Sunday stashbusting report

  • I finished up 1 UFO using stash for back, binding. The Lizard top got quilted and has a backing from stash.
  • Two donation tops the Red HeartStrings and the Coins quilt have bindings from stash.
  • I bought fabric for the first time in probably 3 months. A set of fat quarters.

I continued to purchase books and embellishments to use in crazy quilting and making postcards.....I haven't put a limit on those but I think I've probably built up enough of an embellishment stash that I can stop purchasing for now.

Football

Can you guess who wasn't unhappy with the Redskins losing today?

This photo was taken just before Christmas - we went to a game when Chris and Becky were here and unfortunately, the Vikings lost. I can't really claim to be a Viking fan yet but I'm giving it a shot. I was a Dolphin fan for many years when we lived in Florida but we kind of fell out of the habit of watching football during the 4+ years we were in Georgia. I've joked for years that my 2nd favorite team is anyone playing against the Redskins!

Very little was accomplished today other than some handwork on my doll quilt and computer work. I'm feeling kind of run down and this cold is still lingering.

UFO #2 finished

I was up late last night finishing the binding and labeling this HeartStrings quilt. It was pieced from group blocks by Sue Frank and quilted, bound, and labeled by me. I love these string quilts!

Quilts shipped

I pulled the Windmill quilt from the dryer and packed up these 5 quilts to send to another HeartStrings member, Cricket who will donate them to homeless families. The bottom 3 tops were pieced by Wanda and sent to me for quilting, the top two are UFO's of mine. Glad to check this off my list!

While I was out running errands today I bought fabric......a set of fat quarters. Since the backings and bindings of the donated tops, and all the fabric for my two UFO's are from stash I guess more went out than came in.... I did mention that fat quarters were my weakness along with books (I bought 3 today).
I've got a little more binding to stitch down on the Red HeartStrings quilt and I should be able to report my 2nd UFO finish to you tomorrow. I can't believe I finished quilting that back in November and am just now getting around to binding it.

Squaring up HeartStrings blocks

Our HeartStrings guidelines call for starting with a 10 inch muslin/fabric base and then squaring to 9.5 inches after piecing the strings. I posted some photos/instructions today showing how I square my blocks.

As I stitched a set of 4 blocks so I could photograph the steps I take squaring them, I realized I've missed sewing these. I think it's time for some more mindless string piecing!

My first UFO finish for 2008

It's that rather ugly UFO I mentioned several days ago but it's DONE! Quilted, bound, and labeled and while the quilting didn't help tremendously I'm sure that the quilt will at least provide some warmth and comfort to someone.

Happy New Year!

I'm starting off the new year with a bang! This morning I finished up the Swirls quilting on the Coins top pieced by Sandra and went ahead and loaded and quilted my little Lizard Strippie top.

HeartStrings members are going to be working on quilts for Project Linus in January (in time for their February 16, Make a Blanket Day) and this one will be donated to the chapter here in the Minneapolis area. It's my favorite quick donation quilt for kids.

So it's January 1st and I already have two tops quilted. I also machine stitched the binding on the Windmill quilt and will hand-stitch it down while Keith and I watch a movie this evening.

I love it when I'm productive!
