I have found it very challenging to pick the paint colors for the townhouse. The beige/tan that most of the place is painted has a pink undertone in a certain light which I've come to accept over the last 3 days BUT the upstairs guest bathroom - I was going for a red accent wall with the other 3 being a gold/tanish color and the paint is completely different than the *chip* I used to pick it ....it's YELLOW, very YELLOW.
At this point I can't even be bothered with it. If I decide I can't live with it, I'll deal with it later and we'll repaint those walls - it's just a small bathroom and I LOVE the red.
Shouldn't quilting make it easier for me to pick and coordinate paint colors?
Keith is home until Sunday morning so tomorrow will be packed with moving chores I need him for before he heads to Denmark for 7 days.

You'd think, right? :) I don't think it's a problem picking colors per se. When we pick fabric, we get a larger swatch than a 2" square, usually, right? Then there's no chance of the fabric becoming lighter or darker once it's used. We know what the end color is going to be. With paint, it could dry lighter or darker, or may be mixed a hair different from one can to the next... way too many variables. It's not you, it's Sherwin Williams. :)
paint is such an odd thing. our great room is painted yellow (which i now love: when we first walked in it was a shock...). depending on the light (or lack thereof) through the wall of windows, it can look very different at different times. sometimes it's bright and sunny, sometimes it's mustardy. always, we love it. it sets off our red couch and all of my quilts nicely. lol
Paints are usually a flat colours, quilt fabrics are rarely solid, they have prints and tones. Also if we use red, we tend to use lots of different reds altogether, so they blend rather than match.
Paint colours are a nightmare :)
Oh my. well I enjoy readying what you've posted here. You make an good point. Shouldn't it make it easier to at least "be less fearful" of color.
I'm no help! I dislike selecting colors for the home. I'm trying to say this is the most delicate of terms, too.
I'm a "Fine, that's good enough!" "Now lets get it and go." kinda gal.
ACK. I'm not help at all. But I wanted you to know I was here, early morning, before coffee.

You are not alone. I have trouble picking the right colors for the walls as well. DH's uncle owns a painting company and DH as well as his brothers worked for him at one time or another. I've learned a couple tips from him. First, if you choose a color from a card that has several shades of the same color always buy the shade one shade lighter than the one you like. Two, it's a good idea to paint a large square, about 3 x 3 feet, with your color and let it dry. Live with it a day or two to make certain you like the color.
We are test painting the dining room, kitchen and bathroom in our new place this weekend. I can't wait to see if the colors we chose are OK.
PS - I let DH pick the exact colors for the walls. I'll tell him what color range I'm thinking of and let him choose the paint.
I am notorious for picking the worst paint colors. They always turn into something else. All I can say is GOOD LUCK!
So...where are the photos??
I usually am not pleased with the color when I paint. Most of the time when I put up the accessories it looks much better. (Except my dining room. It has been a year and I still hate the color... lol)
Sherwin Williams "Tawny Tan" and "Oyster Shell" are the two neutrals in my house (in semi-gloss). Tawny is about the color of a paper-sack--DH's description.
I'm still happy with both colors.
